Attention Fathers! Solutions to Challenges

Men facing difficult challenges will be offered concrete ways to become

stronger fathers at the 6thAnnualMilwaukee Fatherhood Summit. The two day

summit will be held Friday October 7 and Saturday October 8 at Destiny Youth

Plaza at 7210 N. 76th Street.

The Fatherhood Summit will present a wide range of workshops and discussion

groups on both days that are focused on giving men the tools to become better

fathers. It will also feature a Job, Health and Resource Fair. The theme of

the event is “Continuing to Empower: the Gifts of Give and Take”.

Two special presentations are planned for the summit that will involve fathers

facing special challenges. On Friday at 12:15 pm, a Gathering will be held

focusing on how to assist fathers returning to the community after incarceration.

 A  panel discussion will be held involving different aspects of the re-entry system

that deal with returning citizens. Confirmed participants include MilwaukeeMayor

Tom Barrett, County Executive ChrisAbele, State Rep Jason Fields,

JudgeMichael Dwyer, and representatives from Community Corrections, Child

Support, Prison Re-Entry, Sojourner Family Peace Center, theAlma Center,W-

2, Driver License Recovery, and the Department of Human Services.

On Saturday at 12:15, the nationally produced documentary film “MenAin’t

Boys” will be shown by award winning producer Lamar Tyler. Following the

showing, participants in Milwaukee area programs like Running Rebels and

Urban Underground along with local artists/activists including Muhibb Dyer

will join Tyler in discussing the film and its testimony concerning men recognizing

and accepting their roles as parents.

The Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit is free and open to the public. It is sponsored

by the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative (MFI) and the Social Development

Commission (SDC) and seeks to help area men become better fathers. By

becoming stronger fathers, they will form stronger families and help create

stronger communities.
