get-attachment.aspx1May is Lupus Awareness Month, and the Milwaukee Urban League Guild along with its partners is sponsoring A Healthy Awareness Day on Saturday, May 17, 2014. The Urban League Guild is taking information to the people to get the word out about Lupus, a cruel mysterious and unpredictable autoimmune disease. Worldwide more than five million people suffer from Lupus. While more people are affected by this disease than leukemia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis combined, the exact cause of this disease is unknown. The effects of Lupus may be mild to serve and sometimes may even result in death.

Lupus is a disease where the body’s autoimmune response looses the ability to always distinguish between healthy tissue and invasive diseases or abnormal cells, and then the autoimmune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. Lupus is a chronic disease for which there is no known cure. Lupus can target the brain, eyes, heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach, muscles, joints, skin, and the reproductive system. Women, between the ages of 15 and 45, make up ninety per cent of all Lupus suffers, and two thirds of them are women of color.

To obtain information about this chronic cruel mysterious and unpredictable autoimmune disease visit the informational table on Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Lena’s Foods on Teutonia Avenue and Capitol Drive or the Piggly Wiggly Midtown.

Sponsors of this event are The Milwaukee Urban League Guild, The National Council of Urban League Guilds, The Lupus Foundation of America, 98.3 AM Radio Station, Lena’s Food Market, Midtown Piggly Wiggly, and the AKA’s of Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter. If you think that you might have this disease, or you want to find out more about Lupus, stop by on Saturday, May 17.
