get-attachment.aspx5       Alderman Joe Davis, Sr. will participate Sunday in a solidarity church service protesting the abduction of more than 200 school girls in Nigeria.

“Decent people everywhere must come together as one worldwide community to condemn this flagrant violation of human rights,” Alderman Davis said. “Until these young women and girls are returned, safe, to their rightful homes, we cannot allow ourselves to forget, and our outrage cannot wane.”

The Sunday solidarity service will take place May 11 at City of Praise Milwaukee, 5112 N. 37th St., at 10:00 a.m. Participants are asked to wear red as a show of solidarity for the mothers of the abducted girls.

Alderman Davis said he is especially thankful to City of Praise Pastor Fola Ojo for organizing the service. “It’s a sign of Pastor Ojo’s broader vision for the needs of the worldwide community that he was willing to take the lead on this important issue,” Alderman Davis said. “He recognizes that an abuse of freedom anywhere is an affront to us all, and that local awareness can spur global change.”

With strong ties to the country of Nigeria, Alderman Davis said the safe return of the abducted girls is an issue of special personal importance to him. Alderman Davis said he learned a great deal about the country and its complex social fabric when he was hosted by then-Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, and that a visit from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo this winter further strengthened Milwaukee’s ties to that nation.

Alderman Davis also chairs Milwaukee’s Sister Cities Committee, and is the former chair of the National League of Cities International Council.
