American Cancer Society Mobilizes Community-Based Outreach, Education and Screening for Cancer in Milwaukee

Walgreens Provides Resources to Help Decrease Cancer Disparities

The American Cancer Society has received funding from Walgreens to launch community-based programs in Milwaukee that will increase access to cancer information, education and life-saving screenings in areas where high burdens of cancer exist. The program in Milwaukee will partner with Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. to utilize community health workers to provide outreach and increase breast and cervical screenings among African American women.
The partnership kicked off at a meet and greet, Monday October 29. The community is encouraged to attend future events to meet the partners and learn more about the project.
“We are extremely honored to work with Walgreens and local community partners such as MHSI to provide resources to reduce cancer disparities in Milwaukee,” said Michelle Hinton, director of community partnerships, American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society estimates that these community-based programs will reach nearly 30,000 individuals with free, life-saving cancer education and screenings in the following communities including Milwaukee; Burien, Wash.; Chicago, Ill.; Cleveland Ohio; Dorchester, Mass.; Detroit, Mich.; Georgetown County, S.C.; Horry County, S.C.; Houston, Texas; Lacey, Wash.; Miami, Fla.; Olympia, Wash.; San Fernando, Calif.; Santa Clarita, Calif.; and White Center, Wash. The Society will also work with the National Baptist Convention to train health-related ministries to educate their congregation about cancer prevention and screening in states such as Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey and Tennessee.
“The generous contribution from Walgreens allows the American Cancer Society to implement community based programs that make a difference in the lives of individuals throughout across the country,” said Joenell Henry-Tanner, MPH, director of community initiatives. “In partnership with community health systems, community health workers and culturally diverse volunteers, we will make progress in the fight against cancer disparities.” 
Funding for the community-based programs is part of Walgreens’ Way to Well Commitment, which focuses on improving everyday health through the prevention and early detection of today’s leading diseases, like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The company and its customers’ donations have contributed to the funding of this program.
