It may be spring, but a Milwaukee Public Schools student is already thinking ahead to the next Wisconsin winter and your next warm-weather gear purchase.
Felicia DeLeon, an 8th-grade student at MPS’ Manitoba School, took on the question of which winter coat insulation works best for her project at the 6th annual MPS District Science Fair.
She’s one of more than 200 students from 30 MPS schools displaying projects at the growing fair, up from 150 students last year. The MPS District Science Fair is set for Thursday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Peck Welcome Center, 10001 W. Bluemound Road, Milwaukee 53226. Media are welcome to attend! The best times to visit are at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Other interest-piquing projects include a Maryland Avenue Montessori School 4th-grade student’s assessment of music’s affect on memory, a Hmong American Peace Academy 7th grader’s analysis of the effect of caffeine on reaction time and a Golda Meir School 7th-grade student’s look at whether listeners retain facts better from a male or female voice. An 11th-grade student at MPS’ Morse Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented, is looking at how to expedite plant growth using the photosynthesis equation.
In addition to the 200 students attending, 10 exhibitors will offer hands-on science activities for students and more than 125 MPS staff members and community members will be judging and volunteering.
“We’re providing an opportunity for students to answer their own questions by constructing experiments,” MPS High School Science Teaching Specialist Karen Green said. “It sparks interest in science and it allows them to showcase it. The students are really proud.” MPS students learn science according to the district’s Comprehensive Mathematics and Science Plan (CMSP), which is based upon the rigorous Next Generation Science Framework.
