Speaker: Mrs. Janie Hatton
St. Mark African Methodist Church, located at 1616 West Atkinson, celebrated lay people at its annual Lay Day The theme was “God Has Plans for Your Life” with scriptural references, Jeremiah 29:11 and Isaiah 40:8.
Speaker, Janie Hatton, Mrs. Isaac Hatton, delivered a spiritually uplifting message to a waiting, well-attended congregation. Her message about seeing the physical beauty of mountains, as in Arkansas, as well as the spiritual beauty of the challenges one faces – beautiful in nature, beautiful in life as part of God’s plan for individual lives. The audience laughed at her “frog and prince” story given to draw even the children into her well-received remarks.
Hatton, member of New Testament Church, trained at Arkansas A.M. & N, University of Wisconsin, with additional work at Harvard and Oxford, former Principal of the Year under President Clinton, and MPS SDA superintendent, currently doing executive coaching with Catapult Leaning Center, personalized her message, reminding former Milwaukee Public Schools employees Carrie Banty (who introduced her as speaker), Doris Wallace (St. Mark’s Lay Organization president) and Evangelist Christine Mitchell (who presented Hatton with a gift from her Delta sorors of St. Mark) of mountains climbed and conquered.
The Lay Organization honored all of the organizations in the church. A 90-day Bible reading challenge was highlighted. About 150 persons, organized in a database by Debra Smith, participated. At least eight persons, Velma Gray on, Olean La then, Minister Sarita Denise Griffin, Noreen Johnson, Zettabell Williams, Doris Wallace, Gloria Sprewer, and Maude Wilson met the challenge to read the entire bible from cover to cover. These eight persons received a DVD of First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech to the AME Church General Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
Margaret Broom was named Lay Person of the Year.
Moving selections from voices in St. Mark’s Praise Chorale, directed by Maurice Cotton, were well received. Rev. Darryl Williams is the church minister.
