City of Milwaukee and Rock the Green celebrate sustainability efforts at third annual Earth Day CelebrationApril 8, 2014 // 0 Comments
MILWAUKEE – (April 8, 2014) – The city of Milwaukee's Office of Environmental Sustainability and Rock the Green will host the third annual Milwaukee’s Earth Day Celebration on Tuesday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CityCenter, 735 N. Water Street, downtown Milwaukee. Mayor Tom Barrett, Alderman Robert Bauman, Matt Howard of the Office of Environmental Sustainability and Lindsay Stevens Gardner of Rock the Green will be on-site to deliver highlights about Milwaukee’s sustainability efforts and ReFresh Milwaukee, the city’s 10-year sustainability plan to make Milwaukee a center for innovation and thought leadership.
“Rock the Green’s mission and the city’s ReFresh Milwaukee sustainability plan are natural partners in educating our residents and improving our neighborhoods,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “There’s no better time to strive toward better resource management and recovery than Earth Day.”
In its third year, the event is moving near the CityCenter, outside the building at the end of East Mason Street on the Riverwalk. In the case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the lobby of the City Center. The building was awarded an Energy Star label in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 for its operating efficiency. In 2012, this building was awarded LEED certification at the Silver level by the U.S. Green Building Council.
“The leadership shown by this group and the city of Milwaukee to foster environmental responsibility is remarkable,” said Sheldon Oppermann, executive vice president, Compass Properties. “The CityCenter is proud of our energy efficiency efforts and we know that if we can accomplish these things with our 100-year-old building we can set a precedence for new buildings to follow – much like how Rock the Green has helped paved the way in keeping sustainability top-of-mind for other large scale events over the past four years.”
The event will incorporate on-site near-zero waste efforts similar to those implemented at Rock the Green’s music festival. A bicycle pedal-powered stage from Power by the People will feature live music by songwriting sister duo, Vic& Gab. They recently performed at South by Southwest, won Song of the Year at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee Music Awards and were named one of the top 10 Wisconsin bands to watch by Journal Sentinel music writer, Piet Levy. The Bella Donnas, an all-female cycling team, and the City Haulers, a team comprised of City Hall employees, will power the stage.
Other eco-friendly efforts will include waste reclamation stations provided by Waste Management, as well as local, sustainable and organic food options from Simmer Milwaukee, Urban Caveman Food Truck, The Fast Foodie, Hard Wood Cafe, Classy Girl Cupcakes, Gouda Girls and Urban Kettle, served on compostable serving ware and napkins.
“This is our third year partnering with Rock the Green for Milwaukee’s Earth Day celebration,” said Matt Howard, director, Office of Environmental Sustainability. “Many of our sustainable practices and strategies align for our Milwaukee community and Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to bring the city together to celebrate our successes and goals.”
Milwaukee’s Earth Day Celebration will also provide opportunities for attendees to learn about the missions of Rock the Green, the Office of Environmental Sustainability and other local organizations that support a similar cause. On-site eco-educational booths will feature event sponsors and organizations that include Rock the Green, ReFresh Milwaukee, Me2, Waste Management, Recycle for Good, Milwaukee Shines, Department of Public Works, Natural Awakenings Magazine, Midwest Bikeshare and more. Additional sponsors of the Earth Day Celebration are 10over12 Creative, Branigan Communications, 88Nine RadioMilwaukee, WUWM, Natural Awakenings and Power by the People.
This year, Rock the Green will take place on September 13 in Veterans Park. Additional information is available atwww.rockthegreen.com.
