Projects continue campaign that focuses on youth involvement
MILWAUKEE – The Coming Together Partnership for the Prevention of Gun Violence announced Thursday, April 10, that six community agencies have been awarded mini-grants totaling $3,000 to pursue gun violence prevention initiatives. The grants were provided as part of the Coming Together Partnership campaign that began with a summit last November that attracted more than 250 young people and adults.
“While the amounts given each agency are relatively small, we feel they will assist in spurring the development of activities among young people that will aid in preventing the continuing menace of gun violence that is affecting many Milwaukee neighborhoods,” said Kari Lerch, Prevention Services Manager at Community Advocates, Inc.
The grants continue the momentum which grew out of last November’s Summit to encourage youth initiatives to end gun violence, she said.
The grants were awarded to:
Holton Youth and Family Center for its participation in the march scheduled for Saturday, April 12, to inaugurate The Bridge Project;
Project Ujima for its plans to develop a “Glow Run” against violence later this year;
Artworks for Milwaukee to assist in involving young people in developing a music video with a theme of preventing gun violence;
Neu-Life Community Development for its 7th Annual Art Show, “The Art of Peace;”
Running Rebels to assist in developing a video as part of “The Bridge Project;”
Serve 2 Unite for its “Gun Free Community” program being held in partnership with Westside Academy.
All of the agencies will be expected to present at the 2nd Annual Coming Together Summit being planned for November, 2014.
The Coming Together Partnership is an initiative involving the City of Milwaukee Health Department Office of Violence Prevention, the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Violence Prevention Initiative, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Community Advocates’ Milwaukee Brighter Futures Initiative.
