February 8, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

n observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Sunday, February 7th

, Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. (MHSI) Early Intervention Program (EIP) is offering free HIV and Hepatitis C testing on Monday, February 8, 2016 from 8AM to 4PM at their two convenient locations MLK Heritage Health Center 2555 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and at the Isaac Coggs Heritage Health Center 8200 W. Silver Spring Drive.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages everyone to know their status.
Of the more than 1.1 million people living with HIV in the U.S., an estimated one in six do not know that they are infected and only one and four has their virus under control with treatment.[1]
According to the Wisconsin AIDS/HIV Program’s 2014 Annual Review, at of the end of 2014, 6,899 persons reported with HIV or AIDS were presumed to be alive and living in Wisconsin.  There were 226 new cases of HIV infection diagnosed in Wisconsin in 2014.  Milwaukee County accounted for 58% of these new HIV cases in 2014 and 49% of all people living with HIV reside in Milwaukee County.  HIV infection disproportionately affects racial/ethnic minorities. In 2014, 67% of new diagnoses were among racial / ethnic minorities, despite minorities making up just 17% of Wisconsin’s population.  It is estimated that 1,125 Wisconsin residents are not aware of their HIV infection.[2]
“The primary objective of the event is to provide access to health care services, community resources, and education that will empower and enrich the lives of the community we serve.  This will in turn impact the awareness of HIV,” says Crystal Collins, RN, Program Coordinator of the Early Intervention Program at Milwaukee Health Services, Inc.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Patients will have access to a range of services that would include HIV and STI testing, health education and insurance benefit assistance. There will be snacks, door prizes and incentives for those who attend.
