Legendary singer and activist Harry Belafonte agrees with Oprah Winfrey’s remark that the death of Trayvon Martin paralleled Emmett Till.
Last month in an interview with theGrio, Winfrey made headlines after saying that in her mind the death of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till were “the same thing.”
“It’s so easy during this time… Trayvon Martin paralleled Emmett Till, let me just tell ya. In my mind. Same thing, Winfrey said.”
The talk show queen was subsequently attacked by various conservatives for her comments.
Belafonte weighed in on Oprah’s comments in part 2 of his interview with theGrio’s Chris Withespoon.
“I agree with Oprah about what she said on making the corollary between the two tragedies,” Belafonte said.
“I not only agree with it, but I must tell you that Emmett Till and Trayvon martin are two young children who have captured the media fancy. But there have been hundreds and hundreds of young black kids, girls and boys who have experienced these kinds of tragedies all across America, and nothing has ever been said about them.”
“Yes I’m glad that America heard the story of Trayvon Martin. I’m sorry that tragedy erupted. I’m sorry for what happened to Emmett Till. It was a great loss of our soul as a nation.”
