2nd Annual Fall Harvest Celebration Honors Guests, Brings Together Community

The last time you bit into a ripe, juicy tomato or strawberry you probably didn’t give it a second thought. But to guests at the Guest House of Milwaukee, it’s a welcome, nutritious addition to their regular carb-heavy, sugary diets. This fresh produce is thanks to Cream City Gardens, an urban garden project started in 2011 by the Guest House in collaboration with Friedens Community Food Pantry. On Thursday, September 20th the Guest House will hold its 2nd annual Fall Harvest Celebration at the Guest House, 1216 N. 13th St. The celebration starts at 6pm and features a free meal prepared by chefs from Maxie’s Southern Comfort; the meal will utilize produce from the Cream City Gardens. Dessert will be provided by Purple Door Ice Cream.

The great thing about Cream City Gardens is that it not only provides healthy food for our guests and our neighbors, but it also serves as a tool for providing training and employment skills for our guests,” said Cindy Krahenbuhl, Executive Director of the Guest House of Milwaukee. “It’s really inspiring to see homeless individuals working side by side in the garden with college students and our other volunteers, and to receive support from local businesses like Maxie’s and Purple Door Ice Cream. It shows that the community does care about those who are struggling.”

Since 1982, the Guest House has been creating solutions to homelessness in Milwaukee. The Guest House serves men in its emergency shelter with transitional housing programs, and serves men, women, and families in its permanent supportive housing programs. Having established a reputation of high-quality service and sound management, the Guest House is considered one of Milwaukee’s leading homeless service providers. Its mission is to provide shelter, housing, education and services for Milwaukee’s homeless who seek to transform their lives with dignity and purpose.
