Tina Campbell had a decision to make after she found out her husband, Teddy Campbell, cheated on her. Leave or work it out. Like many women, she decided to work it out.
Tina took “full responsibility” for her husband Teddy Campbell’s cheating ways in a recent interview with CNikky and it has us examining the dynamic of infidelity in relationships.
In case you missed it (this season of “Mary, Mary” is all about it) Tina revealed, in an interview with Ebony Magazine, that her husband had cheated on her. We’ve been there.
“I, Tina, assume full responsibility for the issues that I contributed to the relationship. I was controlling, talked too much. And you can never be heard over me because when I wanna talk I got the floor and ain’t nobody gonna get it from me until I give it up,” she said. “Real talk. That was the way it was and I have to work on myself. You know what I mean? I was selfish. When we started having children it’s like, I forget that I have a responsibility as a wife. And I’m questioning you like, ‘Really, what you want me to do? I gotta baby!”‘
Before we go burning our bras, we can’t say we don’t understand where Tina is coming from. “Men have needs,” we’ve heard this passed down from our grandmothers, mothers, aunts and even our dads. “Let a man be a man,” is another golden nugget.
If ever you’ve been in a long-term relationship, appreciating your significant other can become secondary after the “comfortability factor” (or in Tina’s case, family and career) sets in. In a relationship, each individual has to take responsibility for what they do or do not contribute. If one person feels neglected, infidelity can occur. That doesn’t make it right but, life isn’t exactly fair.
“Even though that’s sometimes what you’re faced with, that ain’t the right spirit to do it in. And what happens is, you’re going on and you’re busy and you’ve got children and you’ve got work,” she continued. “And what happens is your husband is last and you don’t realize that he’s last. And if he has a problem with being last you’re like. Well, what am I supposed to do? You know that I’ve got a career? You know that I’ve got these babies, you’re the one that got me pregnant!’ You want your husband to be the man and to take his place, but because ‘I’m a strong woman, I’m a this woman and I’m a that woman’ we busy stepping on our man. Making him feel small. And you know what? I did that. And I take responsibility for that.”
However true Tina’s statement is, we’ve also learned, through life experiences, that a man will cheat whether they have a reason to or not (not saying there’s ever really an excuse to cheat but…you get it. Right?). A reliable source also told us, “[Teddy] just couldn’t keep his d*ck in his pants.” Well that changes things.
It also begs the question, how can a woman do it all? Where the hell was Teddy when Tina was recovering from having a baby? Tina took responsibility for her husband cheating but that doesn’t mean she’s at fault.
How do you feel about her statements and what would you have done in her shoes?
