Patrick Jones, author of the prize winning book “Selma of the North: Civil Rights Insurgency in Milwaukee,” will be joined by Capuchin friar Matthew Gottschalk, co-founder of the House of Peace and well known central city Milwaukee pastor, in a discussion about Milwaukee’s civil rights struggles of the 1960s. The event will take place February 5, 8:30am-Noon, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 1927 N. Fourth Street, Milwaukee. There is no charge to attend the presentation. All are welcome. The event is in honor of Black History Month.
Father Michael Bertram of St. Francis of Assisi parish explains, “This was a critical time for our city. We wanted to capture the story of this important era through Dr. Jones’ book and Father Matthew’s personal experience in the African American community. We can all learn from this historical lesson.”
Dr. Jones’ book was awarded the Gambrinus Prize from the Milwaukee County Historical Society as “Best Book of 2009.” It was also awarded the 2010 Merit Award from the Wisconsin State Historical Society and was selected as a CHOICE “outstanding academic title.” Jones is an Associate Professor of History and Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and serves as the Undergraduate Chair in History.
Dr. Jones’ book has been very well received. Tim Tyson, author of Blood Done Sign My Name, states that Dr. Jones’ book is “…a riveting new story of the civil rights movement in America, a tale on par with Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery in its power and importance.”
“Meticulously researched and elegantly written, The Selma of the North provides a devastating rebuttal of many of the conventional narratives of the civil rights movement,” writes Jeanne Theoharis, editor of Freedom North and Groundwork.
