After 20 months of planning, the Milwaukee Center for Leadership Development (MCLD) is prepared to deliver its first class of the Executive Youth Leadership Training program (EYLT).  Classes will be held at Coffee Makes You Black located at 2803 North Teutonia Avenue, in the ALL Learning Lab every Saturday from January 21, 2012 through April 14, 2012.  A mandatory orientation for all participants and their parents will be held in the same location on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm.  Registration for this program is now in progress.

The MCLD’s Executive Youth Leadership Training program (EYLT) is a 13-week course in which the youth participants in grades 10-12, embark upon a journey of intensive self-discovery and leadership training.  As participants attend one 2 ½ hour session each week, they are equipped with information, resources, and tools that will enable them better leaders and to achieve their academic and life goals.

At each session of the EYLT, the youth participate in group projects and some form of oral communication activity.  While learning about leadership, philanthropy, communication, and healthy personal habits, the youth participants typically emerge from this program with a greater sense and appreciation of self and a clear understanding of what they must do to achieve their goals.

The MCLD is committed to exposing African-American youth to programs and experiences, such as the EYLT which assist them in developing socially as well as academically.  “Whether we want to admit it or not, there are issues with socialization which hinder the overall success of so many of our young people,” says Tamiko Jordan-Obregon, the executive director of the MCLD.  “Many of the problems are often ignored or excused while we attempt to sweep the issue of race, as it pertains to education, under the rug.  We have to be honest about the real issues and address them accordingly if we are to see genuine change in Milwaukee.”
