MPS students to perform teacher-written play focused on local black history

MILWAUKEE (March 23, 2012) ‹ Milwaukee High School of the Arts students will
perform a play Friday night written by one of their teachers and focused on
black history in Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
³We learn about black history in February and they normally talk about Dr.
King, Rosa Parks,² writer and MHSA teacher Colette Allen said. ³They¹re
prominent people but we never hear about what the people in Milwaukee and
Wisconsin have done.²
Forty to 45 students will take part in the 7 p.m. performance of the show
dubbed ³Did You Know That…²
The educational and entertaining show plays tribute to local leaders
including Vel Phillips, Lloyd Barbee, Orville Pitt, Father James Groppi,
Ezekiel Gillespie and the NAACP.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students for the show at MHSA, 2300 W.
