MPS to rename Garden Homes after noted civil rights attorney and legislator Lloyd Barbee Garden Homes school, which will be renamed after Barbee.November 25, 2010 // 0 Comments
An MPS elementary school has been given a new name, in honor of revered Milwaukee civil rights attorney Lloyd Barbee, who passed away in 2002. Garden Homes Elementary School, 4456 North Teutonia Avenue, has been renamed Lloyd Barbee Montessori School.
The effort allows the district to honor a man who was integral in the drive to desegrate the district more than 40 years ago, while also reflecting the school’s curriculum change to Montessori learning.
The Board of School Directors approved the name change at its meeting on November 16, 2010. The change to the school name is immediate. Lloyd Barbee Montessori School features kindergarten through grade 5. The Montessori curriculum was introduced at the kindergarten level this school year, and will grow by grade level each year until the traditional curriculum is fully replaced. Barbee led the civil rights movement in Milwaukee for many years.
He was considered the most influential figure in Wisconsin in implementing the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education. Contact MPS Communications and Public Affairs for more information, (414) 475-8237.
