The Milwaukee NAACP’s branch elections for its presidency and other offices have been suspended by the national office of the NAACP, which will come to oversee a new election process.

The news came in a letter from the national headquarters in Baltimore to the Milwaukee branch, notifying it that the national is intervening in the branch’s election. According to a branch official, previously scheduled meetings for this month and November have been cancelled.

The election was to pick new branch officers, particularly the successor to its retiring president Jerry Ann Hamilton. The candidates for the top position are branch vice president Wendell Harris and veteran civil rights attorney James H. Hall.
