The new editor-in-chief ofEssence magazine, Vanessa K. Bush, was honored at a star-studded event on Monday in New York City. Surrounded by celebrities from the worlds of media and fashion, Bush addressed the crowd, gathered in an intimate setting, from a space overlooking Central Park in the Time-Warner Center.
“I am humbled and gratified to lead the world’s largest brand for black women,” Bush said to assembled listeners. “I’ve been a part of the Essence family for a long time now. Besides my own family and cherished friends — Essence has been a central part of my working life for 10 years, and has been a part of my evolution as a black woman, mother, daughter, friend, and advocate — helping me in finding my voice and finding my way in the world.”
Thanking Time Inc. editor-in-chief Martha Nelson, in addition to storied Essence editor Susan L. Taylor, Bush also expressed gratitude for the vision of Essence founder Ed Lewis, who was also in attendance.
Her audience clapped appreciatively as the new leader of Essence outlined the commitment of the magazine’s entire staff to serving their nearly 10 million readers with the best and most inspiring information geared towards black women’s needs and perspectives.
Supermodel and businesswoman Iman, Essence editor-at-large and lifestyle guru Mikki Taylor, and news anchor T.J. Holmes — in addition to dozens of other important figures behind the scenes in media — congratulated Bush for her ascension to a much-deserved position of leadership. Bush stressed that her main function will be to serve the Essence reader.
“This is an extraordinary time for all women — and especially for black women,” Bush concluded. “I ask that in this digital/social world where accuracy and accountability in storytelling are more important than ever, that you will join us in telling the true story of black women’s lives in all our expanding platforms.”
Vanessa K. Bush was announced as the new head of the black women’s lifestyle bible on July 31, 2013. She assumed this role after serving as the acting editor-in-chief beginning in February 2013.
