Play in the Parks offers free, family fun

Northwestern Mutual Foundation, Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital and Milwaukee County Parks partner with the Y to deliver innovative program for area families

Play in the Parks, a new, free program that encourages families to get outside this summer, get moving and enjoy an evening of games and activities, is under way at eight different Milwaukee parks.

The first session will be held until July 21 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Mitchell Park on Mondays, Jackson Park on Tuesdays, Humboldt Park on Wednesdays and Sheridan Park on Thursdays. Y staff facilitates games each week such as kickball, red light green light, Simon says and more.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee (the Y), the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital and Milwaukee County Parks teamed up to launch Play in the Parks, which was designed to create introductory experiences at local parks that support the development of family play time, and encourage good health through physical activity while strengthening families and creating community.

“The focus of our giving is to secure future generations, and one of the best ways to help kids achieve their full potential is to encourage them to adopt healthy habits,” said Kimberley Goode, Northwestern Mutual Foundation president. “Play in the Parks helps us ‘tip the scales’ in the Milwaukee area towards wellness and healthy living. The sooner our children can learn healthy eating habits and the importance of an active lifestyle, the better.”

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the percentage of overweight or obese high school students is 25% for Wisconsin and 37% for the Milwaukee Public School District. For the first time in history, children may have shorter lifespan expectancies than their parents.

“Sponsoring Play in the Parks is an opportunity for Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital to give back to the community. This is a unique partnership with the Y to help get families outside and active. It aligns with our own vision to promote healthy lifestyles. What better way to do that than to have fun in the park!” said Dr. Bill Pennington, Orthopedic Surgeon, Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital.

“As a result of the generous support from our sponsors, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital, we will be able to offer this program for free to families the entire summer,” said Donna Bembenek, senior vice president of philanthropy and communication strategy for the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.

“None of this would be possible without our friends at the Milwaukee County Parks. They have been instrumental in helping us extend the reach of Play in the Parks to families in communities across Milwaukee,” said Bembenek.
