Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 17, St. Matthews CME Church at 11 a.m. for Rose M. Mays, who passed away Aug. 9. St. Matthews, where Mays was a member, is located at 2944 N. 9th Street.
Mays was born in Milwaukee to Osborne and Corrine Neylon. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and MATC where she received her LPN license.
She married Robert L. Mays, Sr. in 1951. From this union was born seven children: Robert, Jr., Phillip, Sharon, Earl, Marcus, Brian and Oletha.
Family members described Mays as a “jazzy little lady who told you the truth.” She had a passion for sewing, especially quilting; making quilts for family and close friends. She was a member of the McGovern Park Quilting Club.
Mays loved attending the various summer festivals and being with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed wearing African outfits and ethnic jewelry, cooking for family. She was especially noted for making homemade dinner rolls and ice cream.
She will be greatly missed, but always remembered, by the Mays and Neylon families and her friends.
Visitation for Mays will be held Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. (family time from 6 to 7 p.m.) at the Northwest Funeral Chapel, 6630 W. Hampton Ave. Visitation at St. Matthew will be Tuesday before the funeral from 10 to 11 a.m.
