As a child I love playing with action figures, transformers were my favorite kind. I also enjoyed power rangers, and many super heroes. My sisters also enjoyed to play along side with their dolls. One day we they asked were their any dolls that were “like us,” meaning black. I replied “I don’t know but here’s a black power ranger.” As my toys were not skin tone specific, I never thought about it, but I knows it bothered her. The announcement by Mattel to partner with Shiona Turini, to create a line of Barbie dolls to represent black girls touches my heart. Although in the past we could find a few dolls that were black in skin tone, the representation was off in hair styles, facial features ect. It was if they just painted the white dolls black. This new line is set to represent the various skin tones, body styles and features of African American women. Kudos the you line let it help many black girls accept who they are in their beauty.
