Toyota General Counsel to Keynote WAAL 22nd Annual Scholarship Award Dinner
WAAL Honors Milwaukee Native, Minority Contributions within Wisconsin’s Legal Field
Milwaukee, Wis. [April 2012] – The Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers (WAAL) is honored to host Attorney Christopher P. Reynolds, general counsel at Toyota Motor Group, Inc. USA, at its 22nd annual “VelanDale” Scholarship Award Dinner on May 1o, 2012 at 6 pm at the Italian Conference Center.
The “VelanDale” Scholarship Award Dinner recognizes the life and legacy of the Honorable Vel Phillips and attorney W. Dale Phillips. The scholarship is awarded to African-American law students at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin. This year’s theme is, “A Celebration of Competent, Confident, and Secure Legal Talent,” where WAAL will highlight the exceptional contribution that minority attorneys bring to Wisconsin’s government offices, corporate legal departments and law firms.
Phillips, a native of Milwaukee, was the first African-American woman to earn a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. She and her late husband, Dale, partnered in law practice and were active in the civil rights movement. Vel Phillips was the first woman elected to the Milwaukee Common Council, and was the first African-American woman appointed as a Juvenile Court Judge in Branch 13, Milwaukee.
The keynote will be delivered by Atty. Reynolds, who spearheads Toyota’s legal operations, and corporate governance. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, and the son of a Ford Motor Co. plant worker. Prior to joining Toyota, Atty. Reynolds served as assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York; partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius; litigator at Hughes Hubbard & Reed; and, law clerk for Judge Damon J. Keith, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Detroit, Michigan. Atty. Reynolds has received awards recognizing both his legal acumen and efforts to promote diversity in the law.
Founded in 1988, WAAL promotes diversity in the legal community via educational outreach, interactions with other bar associations and providing law school scholarships. This year’s “VelanDale” event is brought in partnership with WAAL 2012 Diversity Partners: Toyota Motor Group, Inc. USA, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, SC, Gonzalez Saggio Harlan, LLP, and Hinshaw & Culbertson, LLP.
