Prize Money to Fund the Will Allen Scholarship

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Will Allen of Milwaukee’s Growing Power has won a grand prize of $25,000 in Green Giant’s Green Awards™ contest. The prize money will be used to support the Will Allen Scholarship. This scholarship helps members of Growing Power’s Youth Corps pay for college.

Allen said, “These young people will be the future of the Good Food Revolution. In addition to the hands-on training they’ve received at Growing Power, they’ll be able to get a formal education and learn the business side of sustainable farming.”

The Green Awards™ program, developed by Green Giant® and supported by a coalition of the some of the country’s leading environmental organizations who make up The Green Awards program Awards Board, recognizes the everyday people who are making a giant difference in their communities and making the world a better, more sustainable place.

More than 100 entrants submitted a video and accompanying essay to describe their projects. The public and a panel of judges reviewed the videos and essays in March and April. The awards were given May 13 at a star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.

Allen said he was proud to be chosen for such an important award, and the competition was stiff.  All 12 finalists had the opportunity to interact and network while they were in L.A. He added, “The finalists are all winners. They’re all doing very worthy work.”

There were four first prize winners, including Allen. Eight finalists won $2,500, to use as seed money for their proposed projects. Altogether, there were more than 100 entries in the contest. Allen’s dedication to growing community through urban farming garnered him first prize in the Entrepreneur category.

Allen said, “This award recognizes the importance of urban agriculture and sustainable food systems in our world. I accepted the award on behalf of my great staff at Growing Power. But I know that I was representing all of the people who are working to support good food systems.”
