Is In-Person Learning Safe?
Ever since COVID started learning for students has been a challenge. When the world shut down last year, March 13th, it was for safety precautions. After a while, many school districts developed a plan in place for students to return safely.
Some schools lessened the amount of students in the building at one time. Some schools budgeted for safety equipment and extra cleaning services. Last year MPS was approved for a multi billion dollar grant, however, many schools are still unsafe.
Having worked at a school, I got to see first hand on just how unsafe it is. I’ve seen dirty floors, dirty bathrooms, dirty stairs, and dirty walls. I’ve seen kids intentionally neglect their duty of wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.
The COVID counts are continually on a rise and going back virtual does not seem like the primary option for the district. As of last week, MPS rolled out a mandate for staff to become vaccinated and a $100 reward for all students above 12 who go get vaccinated.
While this saddens me, I’m not sure the focus is learning at this point. I don’t feel student and staff safety is a priority for MPS. I don’t feel that the goal is for kids to learn.
What do we do? How do we make sure our kids are learning and are safe? What can we do as a community? How can we make this better?

Monday Motivation: You Come First
Happy Monday! Don’t tell me. I already know; it came WAY too soon. It feels like just yesterday it was Friday. Sometimes, I wonder why the weekend has to go so fast.
The reality of the matter is this. It’s over! It’s time to focus in on this week and the things that need to be done. You may have a tun of tasks to tackle, but what’s most important is that you put yourself first.
Now this can be quite tricky because it’s so easy to not put yourself first. It’s easy to help others first. It’s easy to let your job and things that produce money first. Those thing may very well have it’s importance.
There definitely are some tasks that are priority. But this week I challenge you to this. No matter how busy your day looks, do something for YOU first thing in the morning. Now this could be working out. It’s could be praying. It could even be just drinking a tall glass of water. Hydrating yourself properly in the morning or fixing yourself a good breakfast works too!
It’s not that the task has to be extravagant, it just needs to be intentional. Putting you first is a phenomenal way to start your day. It’s how you show yourself that you value you.
When you treat yourself better, you naturally treat others good as well. I’m no MD or therapist but I can say I feel so good when I take care of me first. It feels like a reminder that I need to do it more often.
So tackle this week with everything in you! Set your goals and go crazy. Just don’t forget to put you first!

MKE Lupus Warrior: Dymond Williams
MKE Legend and Lupus Warrior, Dymond Williams, fought a good fight. While being diagnosed with Lupus at 17, she never let that stop her from pushing. Each and every day she woke up swinging. As Lupus attacked her body severely through many different organs she kept going.
Dymond has had multiple strokes, heart issues, and many other health problems all due to Lupus. She even had to re-learn how to speak properly. Such a young girl going through the most.
I remember many years of her in and out of the hospital, feeling like a test dummy, knowing the doctors didn’t have the answers. They knew what the problem was but couldn’t find the solution. Part of this is because of just how different Lupus is person to person.
Dymond was a beautiful woman inside and out. She loved her family and friends. She was extremely passionate about kids. She took in many kids as her own.
She was one of the most supportive souls. She loved and loved hard. Dymond was rare. She was very angelic on earth, always trying to make sure the people she loved were well.
Dymond planned to do a lot more events while bringing awareness to Lupus. She loved to speak about Lupus on her socials whether she was feeling good or not. She often times gave real life updates of her hospitalizations and flares.
Dymond was truly a warrior. She woke up everyday and fought. She fought for the people she loved. She fought for the kids. She fought for her friends. Her presence will surely be missed but never forgotten.
Dymond, thank you for your fight. You inspired so many. You loved your city deeply. It was a blessing to be able to highlight you as a legend in the city and even more of a blessing to have had you as such a good friend. You truly blessed us with the 30 years of life that you had.
We will miss you forever and always love. We will never stop making Lupus Awareness a priority.
My deepest condolences to the family.

Healing Is a Process Make The First Step!
On September 4th, a gathering of Healing agents tool place, as the event served as a healing space for many. Event creators have often said “our community needs to heal” but what does that mean? Trauma is all around us in our everyday lives, in fact that statement cannot have enough attention. “The Healing Gathering” was hosted by Marrika Rodgers, a Mental Health Clinician in Milwaukee who was joined by other professionals during the event.

It might be a lot going on in your life right now and that’s okay. You may feel overwhelmed with issues coming from every direction. You may have had a rough week or a rough month. But guess what? You were built for this.
Maybe something you really wanted to work out didn’t fall through. Maybe you lost a friend or family member. Maybe you’re disconnecting from a relationship that you’ve put your all in. Well, guess what? You were built for this!
Perhaps you’re in a tough situation and you need some help. Maybe you feel the need to cater to your mental a little more this week. Guess what? You were built for this!
You never know what obstacles will come your way. But one thing’s for sure and that’s knowing the obstacles will come. Sometimes our moods, days, and schedules get thrown off but that’s normal.
Some days we dread waking up. Some days we wish our situations were different. Some things just don’t go as expected. And that’s fine! You were built for this.
Problems come and problems go. This week, don’t focus on why the problems come your way. Instead, focus on solutions. Focus on things that are going to solve and prevent the problem in the future.
I’m saying, “You were built for this” passionately and with care because “You” doesn’t just mean you. You have people that love you around you. You have resources available for your use. You are not alone in this life.
You have the power to grow through what you go through. You have the choice. Focus on your options. Focus on your solutions. Take a deep breath and keep going and remember, YOU WERE BUILT FOR THIS!
