A reception hosted by Milwaukee community activist, Carmen A. Murguia, is being held on Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 from 4-5:30pm at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, 1110 North Market Street, 2nd Floor Conference Room, in honor of their guest, Norma Guillard, a social psychologist and adjunct professor at the University of Havana. Refreshments, and food from Cubanitas will be served.
“I am extremely honored to be asked by Art Heitzer of the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba to host a woman of her stature from our LGBT community. Iimmediately responded and am reaching out to all communities: LGBT, Women, Latino, Black, everyone, to join us at this intimate reception. I am excited to add that Liliana E. Gutierrez, also of La Havana, Cuba, will interpret for us. It’s going to be an amazing time!” Carmen said enthusiastically. Norma Guillard, featured in the film, Maestra, joined the 1961 Cuban Literacy
Campaign when she was 15 years old. She is now a social psychologist, adjunct professor at the University of Havana, and is past President of the Cuban Association of Psychologists. As an Afro-Cuban, and a founder of the first organization of lesbians and bisexual women in Cuba, she primarily works on the issues of gender, race, sexual orientation, and diversity and identity in a Cuban and Caribbean context. She is a colleague of Mariela Castro, at Cuba’s National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX). A special thanks to WI Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba for sponsoring the food and the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center for providing the space.
