Carmen Schools of Science and Technology is positioning high school students for success through a unique Health Care and Information Technology Career Pathway available to students in grades 10-12.
This inventive pathway program prepares students for employment as health care customer service assistants certified nursing assistants, or information technology service center technicians. Students who participate have a chance to explore career options while still in high school and are better prepared to take courses at 2-year colleges leading to additional technical diplomas and associate degrees such as medical assistants or medical coding specialists, or to continue on to four-year colleges where they can major in nursing, pre-medicine and other health professions as well as information science and computer science and engineering.
As the result of an on-going partnership with the Milwaukee Bucks, Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, the first cohort of 17 Carmen students began their course-work this past fall. Having successfully fulfilled all requirements, the newly certified teen workforce is now eligible for paid apprenticeships at area hospitals and businesses.
Of the seventeen student apprentices, eight will enhance their skills and knowledge as IT Service Center Technicians or Healthcare Customer Service Representatives at the Froedtert location this summer. The attached photos show them as they eagerly headed off for their first day of training this morning.
Before they boarded the Carmen shuttle a few shared these comments:
“This opportunity will help me see if this is the career path I want to pursue rather than just randomly picking something out of the million options out there. I am excited to see and learn new things.” ~ Miracle
“I want to be a nurse practitioner. I appreciate this chance to get hands-on experience that will help me reach my career goal.” ~ Jameya
“This experience will help me further my career goal to becoming a physical therapist. I will be able to show that I am dedicated to this field and that I have experience.” ~ Amari
This exciting day marks another milestone in our dedicated partnership with the Milwaukee Bucks, Froedert and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Later this summer we will be unveiling a state-of-the art Learning Center, funded through the generosity of these partner organizations. This new space will be the hub for Carmen’s Health Care and Information Technology Career Pathway, which also includes an innovative initiative to engage as many as 100 adults from the Milwaukee community in the program to learn alongside the Carmen students.
