I hope everyone had a good Mother’s Day this past weekend. Every year this is usually a happy time to be with relatives and friends celebrating the great women in our lives. Some people go to church, breakfast, brunch/lunch and/or dinner to celebrate this occasion. Food is part of many of our celebrations plus a little drink also. Let me ask you a question. What do you do when you have an issue or problem that keeps bothering you? I know people would have a variety of answers to this question. I like to keep it in the forefront to make sure it isn’t easily forgotten and remains an item of concern. So, if you know my thought process you know that I am going to bring up reckless driving again. I don’t think you can talk about this too much. There were two horrible car crashes late Sunday evening, involving reckless driving, that killed six people in total. Ladies and gentlemen this is really getting a little ridiculous. We need, in police terms, an all-city assistance. All-city is when you call in help from all over the whole city. For this reckless driving we need the whole city to be and get involved to wipe it out.
The first incident was a little before midnight in the area of 60th and Fond du Lac Avenue. Two vehicles collided in the intersection when one ran the red light going over 80 miles per hour. In the vehicle that ran the red light several people were ejected from the car. Dead at the scene were a 21-month-old, 2 15-year-old girls and a 17-year-old boy. A 32-year-old man, who was also in this vehicle, died later at the hospital. Both drivers were placed under arrest. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was suspected of being driving under the influence. Why would a vehicle be traveling at 80 miles per hour on a city street? You have numerous people in your vehicle, that don’t appear to be wearing seat belts, or children in a child seat. We, all of us, must be more responsible for our actions. You, I, all of us, know people that don’t use seat belts or maybe don’t put their child in a child seat when needed. It’s time we all speak up when we see this going on. They might get mad at you or tell you to mine your own business. But so, what if you get through to a few it might save someone’s life.
The second incident was at 29th and Capitol Drive. A 68-year-old man from out of town was driving at a high of speed and lost control striking a tree. He died from this accident and three passengers were injured including one in critical condition. The office of Mayor Cavalier Johnson put out a statement: “The loss of lives overnight is horrifying”. “The serious injuries and the ages of the people involved compound the tragedy. I extend my condolences to the families and friends of the victims.” “My hope is that last night’s incidents provide a wakeup call throughout Milwaukee, reminding drivers to follow traffic rules thoughtfully and cautiously”.
