This Christmas is the perfect time to build your own house, Gingerbread house that is. This task can be like building a real house because you must construct each item for your home.Years ago, I completed a baking production course at a local college and making a gingerbread house was one of the projects, so I do have a little experience, but honestly no skill is needed.
Building a gingerbread house can be done in many ways. You can make, cut, and bake the cookies for the house from scratch, or buy a kit that has all the tools needed to construct a house., which is what I did, but I added more candy and icing. When you buy the kit there is a small quantity of candy and icing, so I added more because I am extra, lol.
Although I have made a house before I made a lot of mistakes and had a few do overs, so I am going to share with you a step-by-step video to see how I constructed the house, so you can have a road map of the process. I will also give you a few tips so you can avoid the mistakes I made.
READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST! If you use the kit, there are several steps you need to take before decorating. The hard part is putting the house together so when assembling I used a few canned goods to hold the house together while putting the icing between the corners of the house.
Let the house dry before decorating and this will take FOREVER! Well, with the kit I used it did, so plan ahead and maybe assemble the house a day early, especially if you have small children who can be impatient because they really like the decorating part. Alos, if it does not dry completely it WILL fall, much like a real house, lol.
I use cake icing for my house because it is easier for me. I cover the house completely and it does not have to be perfect because you will cover it with candy. Put a thick layer of icing so it will be easy for the candy to stick, but do not put too much icing to avoid the candy sliding off the roof.
There is no recipe or right or wrong way to build your house, be creative, have fun and enjoy your new sweet gingerbread house!
