Contrary to popular belief, the millennial vote matters more than we think. It seems many people believe that voting was a thing of the past and that it doesn’t matter. They believe regardless of if they vote, the system is rigged and America is going to do what America is going to do.
While I personally can understand this mindset; for after learning about manipulative things this country has done in the past, it seems we would never have a chance. But the truth is we have let the past make us so bitter at times that we don’t believe in the change we could be. We don’t believe our votes count. We doing believe our voices mean anything.
While after doing more research, I’ve found out some even more interesting facts.
Black people weren’t even considered citizens until 1868. After the Civil War, the 15th Amendment, ratified in 1870, prohibited states from denying a male citizen the right to vote based on “race, color or previous condition of servitude.” Yet and still many polls discriminated against the black vote. Yes, even though these laws were made, we were STILL restricted at the polls in many areas.
It wasn’t until The Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote as guaranteed under the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. If we do the math that’s literally 100 plus years of our arrival where we were not able to participate in the events of the core political foundation of this country. We weren’t able to be a part of what makes America—America. Whites didn’t want our votes to count because that would give us too much power.
This information alone should be the motivation you need to be able to stand and make a difference! We need the right people in office. People that vow to hold Americans accountable for their acts of injustice and lack of diversity. We need leaders that truly care for the people not just their people.
After watching the Political Debates, it is clear that the current leadership of this country is in shambles. Many of us couldn’t take our President and Vice President serious after seeing them repetitively disrespect the moderator, after receiving the rules of the debate prior to. They both disrespected their opponents by cutting them off over and over. — Even an 8th grader posed a question, trying to figure out why the debates were so nasty.
I personally believe character is everything and the leaders of the office are repetitive liars and it seems like their a half of an outfit away from clowns. They lie right to our face over and over and blame it on the facts that they don’t want the American people to panic. Either way this is not acceptable and it NEEDS TO CHANGE NOW!
Millennials, we need your vote. You are the future politicians, you have the future of America in your hands. Each vote means something, no matter what. So decide how you’re going to vote and let’s make it happen in 2020!
