MPS opens first high school-based College & Career Center

WHO and WHAT
Milwaukee Public Schools is opening its first high school-based College & Career Center at Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education to help students understand and take advantage of their postsecondary education options. MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver will be joined by U.S. Department of Education Deputy Undersecretary Kim Hunter-Reed in the official opening of the center on Monday, December 18 at 8:30 a.m. at the school.
The center is the first in a series of centers that will open in all MPS traditional high schools by Spring of 2019. The school-based College & Career Centers allow for a more seamless partnership between high school counselors, teachers, parents and the College & Career Center advisors in supporting each student’s journey to success after high school.
By 2018, more than 60 percent of jobs will require some form of post-secondary education. The College & Career Centers are part of the district’s goal to ensure each student graduates from high school ready to succeed in college and career.
MPS College & Career Centers assist all Milwaukee-area students grades 6-12 and beyond with free college and career support, including admissions, financial aid, scholarship applications and resume and essay writing. The centers also provide educational workshops on a variety of college and career readiness topics.
The College & Career Centers have served a total of 111,000 unique students and had 22,000 visits since its inception in 2011. In the 2015-16 school year, the center had 4,459 visits.
In spring 2017, the College & Career Centers also will provide support for students attending MPS C.A.R.E.S. Twilight Centers. For Twilight Centers locations and hours, visit mpsmke.com/cares.
