Coretta Scott King told us “freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” That quote rings especially true this week as we reflect on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
On January 22nd, 1973, the Supreme Court issued the landmark decision that protected abortion as a constitutional right. Women across the country celebrated, as the movement for women’s rights entered a new era.
But recent history proves progress can be destroyed, oftentimes quicker than it was made. In just one term, Donald Trump committed the greatest assault on reproductive rights of any president in modern history. The justices Trump appointed to the Supreme Court perfectly carried out his extremist anti-abortion agenda, casting the deciding votes to overturn Roe v. Wade after it was the law of the land for nearly 50 years.
From his own mouth,Trump takes credit for being the one to “get rid of” and “kill” Roe. He’s spoken about wanting to punish women and doctors. He’s even gone as far to endorse a national abortion ban and promised to “lead the way” on enacting one should he be elected again.
We simply cannot let that happen. Women in Wisconsin not only deserve but are entitled to the right to make our own health care decisions.
When women are disempowered from making our own health care decisions, that has ramifications on our families, in our communities, and beyond.
Every woman must have the ability to make her own choices and those choices must be respected. Donald Trump believes he and his MAGA Republican allies should be the decision makers. We can’t stand for that.
I’m proud to be supporting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris because they understand reproductive freedom is an essential right in this country. Since taking office, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been focused leaders on this issue. Joe Biden has called on Congress to codify Roe into federal law so that we can put back in place the sacred rights Donald Trump took away from us.
Kamala Harris is bringing the fight directly to Wisconsin, going on a nationwide Reproductive Freedom tour that’s kicking off here in Milwaukee. Just as women 51 years ago fought for the right to choose, we must do the same by rejecting Trump at the ballot box once again and sending President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House this November .
