he Social Development Commission (SDC) is excited to host its first Youth Empowerment Summit on Friday, March 25th from 8am to 2pm at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. The theme of this year’s Summit is Repairing the Cracks in our Community’s Foundation.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted and deepened some of our community’s greatest inequities. SDC will use the Youth Empowerment Summit as an opportunity to teach our youth that they are the future and have the power to overcome these disparities. The Summit will equip youth with the tools to break the cycles of poverty and trauma in their communities. Youth will walk away as empowered leaders and changemakers for their generation.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in two interactive workshops of their choosing, hear from keynote speakers, listen to spoken word poetry, enjoy a luncheon, and walk away with resources they can use to improve themselves and their community.
This year’s keynote speakers are Milwaukee’s own La’Ketta Caldwell, Executive Director of Raising the Bar, and Jamaal Smith of the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention. Workshops will be presented by True Skool, the INSPIRED Network, SDC’s Youth Advisory Board, and SDC Youth Services.
Parents, guardians, and teachers are also invited to attend the Youth Empowerment Summit. During the Summit, the adults will have the opportunity to attend 2 interactive workshops that will discuss suicide awareness and substance abuse.
Schools, parents, and students can visit SDC’s website for more information and to register. Tickets are free and both virtual and in-person options are available.
For more than 50 years, the Social Development Commission (SDC) has served as a planner, coordinator, and provider of human service programs for low-income individuals and families in Milwaukee County.
