As of this morning, six women have lost their lives to domestic violence in Milwaukee County. All six died by gunfire, and all were black women. Incidents like these have left our community with heartache. Many of us have questions like “what can we do and where can we start?”
Most of the families didn’t suspect any issues going on at home. And that’s true, most abuse goes on behind closed doors. However, say something. If you’re thinking about it, there’s usually a reason. You could be saving a persons life. Here are a couple of things to ask when you get a chance to talk to them:
•Ask if anything is wrong
•Talk specifically about what concerns you
•Listen carefully
•Let the person know you’re always there to talk and that your conversations are always private
•Offer to help
•Support the person’s choices
We all can play a part in making sure our loved ones, families, and friends don’t have to go through situations like these alone. Let’s all take a moment to remember those mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends.
