In honor of Black History Month, the City of Milwaukee website (city.milwaukee.gov) and the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable, channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse and streaming at www.city.milwaukee.gov/channel25) will again be recognizing influential figures in Milwaukee’s Black history with the 28 Days of Black History campaign. The campaign, now in its sixth year, will center on a theme of “Keeping the dream alive.”
Each day in February, a local individual who has made a positive impact on Milwaukee’s Black history will be profiled. The prominent online spot will give Milwaukeeans across the city a chance to learn about – and to honor – some of the city’s notable and unsung heroes who have not only worked for the betterment of the Black community, but whose impact has also been felt throughout the greater Milwaukee community.
The public information and awareness initiative is coordinated this year by Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd and AldermanRussell W. Stamper, II. “Black history is American history that is living and evolving, putting a context and focus on life in Milwaukee and across our nation,” the Council members said.
“As we proudly approved renaming Old World Third Street to its rightful name – N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive – we also work each day to keep the dream alive in making life in our city as just and as equitable as it should be, for African Americans and for all citizens. It is in that spirit that we encourage you to go to the city website this month to enjoy the daily profiles of everyday Black history heroes from Milwaukee – some who have made history and others who are making history right now,” they continued.
