Honesty
Out of almost all of the characteristics of a true friend, honesty is one of the most important. Be real with your friends no matter what. No one wants to build a relationship with someone who’s not being real. Tell the truth and be a person someone can trust. Be honest, but also understand just because you’re honest doesn’t mean you’re right.
Being Nonjudgmental
Don’t judge your friends. Listen to them. Even if something seems completely out of the ordinary, respect them. Keep a safe space for open communication.
Gas Your Friend
Support and acknowledge your friend and their accomplishments. Cheer them on! Be present on special occasions. Give them compliments and inspire them to keep going!
Reliability
Don’t be that friend that no one can count on. Be the friend that’s there. A reliable friend stays faithful to their obligations, and is trustworthy. If you make a promise, keep it.
Easy Going
Don’t make it hard to be your friend. Don’t find yourself offended often. Be courteous and willing to listen to the other party’s side and perspective of any disagreement or misunderstanding. Listening to their reasoning can provide clarification.
Take Responsibility
You’re not always right. Just because it sounds right, doesn’t mean it is. You make mistakes. You fall short. No one is perfect.
Do Nice Things
Plan outings and events. Go out and do things. Experience life. Travel. Live.
Apologize
When you are wrong, say that. Maybe you did the wrong thing by accident, maybe you overreacted, maybe you made your friend upset. Regardless of what happened, if you were in the wrong, apologize. Allow space, if necessary. Then move on.
Although these are just a few tips to being a good friend, these tips can go a long way. Friendships are important. They literally shape the trajectory of your life. So keep the right people around you and cherish their love, energy, and time. Show your friends that they are valued.
