(Columnist note: It’s the end of the first quarter, so I must clean out my message file. Aside from some personal tropes, I decided to provide a sample of comments that keep me energized and frequently confused…)
Mr. Holt, for the second time in recent months, you’ve used the sexist, disingenuous, and insulting example of a chicken egg to make a point about the painful and life-altering practice of abortion.
Your attempt at humor falls short and overly simplifies the tragic medical procedure. While your example holds a tiny bit of relevancy, it pales against the inescapable callousness of comparing a fetus to an egg.

(For the record, I wasn’t trying to be humorous. Nor was I trying to be facetious. While I support a woman’s right to control her body, I think we have overly simplified what some consider a life-and-death issue.
And I find it to be disingenuous in that those who diss opponents of abortion as self-righteous have no respect for their religious orientation. Believe it or not, there are Muslims and moderate Christians who believe in the sanctity of human life, and not all of them are right-wing conservatives.)
Signifyer Holt,
I agree with many of your points in your column on the referendum; the one issue you failed to mention is that our children deserve more money. In fact, they are behind, as you say, because of the funding inequity.
When all of our schools are on equal footing with Nicolet or Marquette high schools, the playing field will even out.
I believe MPS can be accused of poor fiscal management, is top-heavy, and cannot justify the salaries of top management (a superintendent who makes as much as the president for 69,000 kids is way out of whack).
25 schools operating at less than 50% capacity is wasteful. However, the question is whether additional resources are needed.
Another alternative to be addressed is a revised Conta Plan, merging MPS with successful suburban schools.
Or putting the most tenured teachers in low-achieving schools.
I agree with the NAACP. However, nothing will change until parents take responsibility for their role in the educational process. Five year old’s who can’t count to 10 or know primary colors and the alphabet is the real issue, along with poverty

(Response: If I was wrong, I was in good company since most Black and Central City residents voted down the referendum.)
Brother, brother, brother. While I highly respect your position as a community historian and elder, it seems like you’re stuck in the 70s and 80s. There is no Black unity, Martin Luther King’s, Malcolm X’s, or Black agenda. Milwaukee is boring; it’s Black residents—by and by—culturally retarded, and politically impotent (sp). There is no way we should continue to lead the country in 10 negative social indicators.
Even Aisha Carr has given up. We care more about basketball than our children, and it speaks volumes that we have no MBE program when we are in the majority.
You would be a great person to coordinate a Black political convention. If you’re interested, please contact me.

After listening to what was announced as an ‘interview’ of Senator Ron Johnson on the Truth last week, it’s obvious we need a Black news program run by professional journalists.
The Truth piece was nothing short of a fluff job and would be better classified as an advertorial. Allowing Johnson to shirk around his racist views and support for the January 6 riot and cuts to lifeline social programs was nothing short of insulting.
That show you were on on Channel 4 was journalism. Since we’re the most immense majority, should we have a Black news program to discuss views and issues and ask stakeholders relevant questions?
Or you could apply to WNOV for a show.
(Not gonna happen, as I assume we couldn’t sustain advertising support if we spoke Truth to power)
Mikel Kwaku…
Suggestion to black leadership
You have implemented many strategies for downtown MKE during the GOP convention, so just ticket and tow unlicensed drivers and cars with no plates in other parts of our city.
You don’t need the state’s approval to disrupt these reckless drivers. MPD should want to participate as it steps up its game to control the streets of MKE. Fill up the tow lots!
Send a message to the streets that this behavior is unacceptable…

Brother Kwaku
Urban terrorists have taken over the streets, and many of us are afraid to drive through the central city.
Speed bumps don’t work, and neither are those who drive recklessly, most recently killing a four-year-old girl. Time to get serious, no matter the consequences.
