The month of June has special significance for black families in the USA. Exactly one hundred years ago on May 31 and June 1, 1921 the financially prosperous black community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma was totally destroyed by a mob of local whites and over 300 persons killed. On June 19, 1865 an announcement was officially made in the State of Texas proclaiming freedom for formerly enslaved peoples of America. June 19th, now known as Juneteenth, Liberation Day, and Freedom Day is a day for celebrating the emancipation of formerly enslaved people of the United States.
On June 19, 2021 Aya World Productions will release the first Black collaborative family music album titled “All One Tribe”, distributed by Tuff Gong International. The 25-track project from the newly organized 1 Tribe Collective celebrates the rich culture and diversity that Black voices bring to family music by presenting the sounds of 24 family music artists from across the USA.
The title track of the album “One Tribe” brings the artists together for an energetic expression of universal belonging and unity. “If we can dance together, we can live together,” the artists affirm. “We are one love, one light, one heart, one mind, one tribe for life.”
“I’m so excited to drop this music for the world! All of the artists bring pure vibes and share songs that uplift black and brown voices in creative, and meaningful ways”, says album producer Aaron Nigel Smith.
“Shine” (Shine & the Moonbeams), co-producer of All One Tribe, is hopeful for what this historic project means for the family music industry at large. “This recording celebrates black children, families and culture with rhythms and grooves that the whole world can enjoy. We’re thrilled to open up the family music space so that more diverse voices can have a seat at the table”.
Amelia Robinson (aka Mil’s Trills), co-producer on the album says. “I’m honored to be a part of a project that centers and amplifies Black voices”.
