Hey Ya’ll! This is still Black History Month, so I wanted to share a little more history. Black Films and Television has evolved over the years, going from no airtime to Black owned networks and studios.
Some of the heavy hitters are BET and Tyler Perry Studios.
We have gone from mainstream to the big screen over the decades and the roles our actors and actresses play has greatly improved. Women have always had challenges when it comes to being equal and being a Black woman has made this even more challenging.
Black women have catapulted themselves into the big screen in a major way. They have broken barriers and records when it comes to acting, so I wanted to share with you a few of them who have been awarded for their contributions.
The Oscars are a big deal to actors, and we have made our mark by winning a few. We have a long road ahead but celebrating small victories is important while on the road to success. Here is a list of Black women who have changed the game in Hollywood.
- Hattie McDaniel was the First African American ever to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1940 for her role in the movie “Gone with the wind”.
- Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for her role in the romantic fantasy thriller film “Ghost”.
- Halle Berry won an Oscar for the movie “Monster’s ball” in 2002, making her the only African American to ever win in the Best Actress category.
- Octavia Spencer won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie “The Help” in 2011.
- Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for her role in the movie “Fences”.
Black women are also making history in the film industry by writing, producing and directing. As we bring Black History month to a close, let’s celebrate these history makers and remember their story. Winning an Oscar or not receiving an award at all, they are still winning!
