What do the holidays look like in the Black Community? In 2019, 729 billion dollars (about $2,200 per person in the US) were spent during the holidays*. How much of this went to the Black community? In 2020 we entered the year with high hopes and expectations and that came to a screeching halt due to the pandemic. However, in 2021 we entered the year with increases in minimum wages, going up to an average of $15.00 per hour from a shameful low of about $7.00 per hour. So, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
Fall is upon us and so is the holiday season and we want to make sure our community gets its fair share. This holiday season let us put our money where our hearts are and support the Black community by shopping locally. In doing this, we will be giving black businesses the opportunity to have stability in business endeavors and to be able to share their history and passions with consumers.
Although I consider myself an all-season person and find beauty and pleasure in all four seasons. I must say Fall/Winter is my favorite. From food and traditions to fashion and gift giving, I am game for all of it! We are still in challenging times with not only Covid 19 cases still rising but with supply shortages as well. So, getting that awesome PS5 game system or the perfect pair of UGGS might be a little difficult this year. I recommend shopping early, making a list, and checking it twice. I am sure you will find the right items at the right price, but if you love to eat like I do, here are a few places to spend your cash this season.
If you are looking for a Juicy Turkey, a Ham or Fresh Greens. Galst Foods has a wide selection of holiday fixings.

During this season snacking is not optional, it is necessary, and I must say that Goody Gourmet’s Popcorn is stupendous! It is simply delicious. I am a popcorn specialist who loves to make homemade popcorn in a kettle or dented pot, lol. So, I know a few things about corn eating. However, Goody Gourmet has caused me to put a pause on my corn popping and I will say I am glad about it, because they have created a buzz in the city with their popcorn favorites like: Cheese, Caramel and Pecan, Cheese and Caramel mix, plus many more. I will admit, I stopped by to purchase 3 bags to enjoy while I typed this story. Make sure to pop on down to support them.

Remember the holiday season is a time to give and share, but it is also a brief time so show kindness every day and not just during the holiday season. Spreading holiday cheer is also the time to remember those who are less fortunate or who have lost loved ones, so be self-less and give of yourself and you will reap a harvest of your own. Enjoy this holiday season, from my family to yours.
