Yes, it is that time of the year again and going back to school for a new year is exciting. Growing up when school started my mother would take her vacation the week school started every year. She used that time to get our routine down packed and to make sure we had a home cooked meal to enjoy after school. Going back to school involves a lot of work for the parent and the child, so here are a few pointers to make things easier.
Over the weekend make sure to plan the whole week of outfits, iron and hang the entire outfit together on a hanger. This will help your children wear exactly what they are supposed to wear and avoid them being late for the bus trying to find a belt or a shirt to match. Also, this will help them to learn to be independent.
Wear protective hairstyles during the school year like braids or buns. Make sure to also use a satin scarf to wrap the hair at bedtime so in the morning little maintenance will be needed. Funny story, I cried when my mother put my hair in a bun for school. Now I see why she did it, but I hated the bun and flash forward to now, my mom is deceased and guess what my favorite hair style is… the BUN! So, you will be surprised how the little things you do can affect your precious jewels later in life.
Lunch is important and going to school requires participation and not having a good lunch can negatively affect their learning. Even if lunch is provided, surprise your children sometime and send them off with a special lunch. Pack their favorite foods and add a handwritten note letting them know you love them and are proud of them.
Lastly, send your children to school with one of three things or all of them. A hug, a kiss or a special quote or statement, even if you must write it down, send them to school with something from you. It can also be a small gift, like a cute pencil or some stickers. The greatest gift is love and showing your children before they go to school that you love them will have a major impact on their lives.
Make it a momentous year!
