Clubs’ popular dance team finds fun way to encourage kids to wash their hands.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – (April 23, 2020) – Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s nationally recognized dance team is giving back the best way they know how — by dancing. The Clubs’ Davis Dancers today released a music video showcasing their best handwashing moves to remind Milwaukee youth to continue practicing good hygiene habits as a way to fight the spread of coronavirus.
“Our dancers really wanted to help in some way. So, we came up with the idea to use music and dance to remind kids to keep washing their hands,” said the team’s instructor, Cedric Gardner. “We use dance as self-expression, and we couldn’t think of a better message to share right now than ‘keep up those good hygiene habits.’ It’s one of the ways kids can help fight the spread of the virus.”
The video features seventeen dancers ranging in age from 8 to 17, all in their own homes or appropriately social-distanced, showing off their pro-level dance moves while scrubbing their hands to Milwaukee native Danny Gokey’s viral sensation, “Wash Yo Hands.” The beat and lyrics of the song are wildly catchy. “Wa-wa-wash your hands/When you gotta cough cough turn your head,” are some of the more light-hearted reminders Gokey sings. But his lyrics hit home with more serious messages, too, like “This is real/It ain’t pretend. If you love your family and your friends/We should help each other out.”
“Hopefully, it will get some steam, dispel fears and will be fun for the kids,” Gokey recently told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the song, which he wrote with three others in early March.
The Davis Dancers’ video is featured on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s website and social media channels, and comes with a warning for parents: be prepared for your kids to spend a lot more time at the sink.
