Closing days of Bronzeville Week feature new and returning events
Bronzeville Week, an official City of Milwaukee event now in its 11th year, is in the home stretch with several in-person and virtual events highlighting arts, wellness and culture. Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs is encouraging residents to take advantage of the remaining opportunities to participate in Bronzeville Week.
Thursday, August 11 begins with two virtual events. All virtual and hybrid events can be viewed online at www.Facebook.com/BronzevilleWeek. The first virtual event is Bronzeville Story Time from noon – 12:30 p.m. Guest presenter LaKetta Caldwell will read Khloe’s Beautiful Blues. The second virtual event kicking off at 1 p.m. is Sound Bath Reflecting the Sun with Melissa Blue. Viewers can experience a therapeutic sound bath to help induce relaxation and harmony.
Thursday continues with Bronzeville Trolley Rides from 2 – 3 p.m. and again from 5 – 6 p.m. Pick up and drop off for the trolley rides will take place at America’s Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM), 401 W. North Ave. In conjunction with the event, ABHM is offering free admission all day. The day concludes with two new events. First from 5 – 9 p.m. is Soul Unplugged on the Porch taking place at Garfield’s 502, located at 502 W. Garfield Ave. The event is hosted by Kwabena Antoine Nixon. Then Black Lens MKE is set to host Trivia Night from 7 – 10 p.m. at Q Restaurant, 2370 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr.
Friday, August 12 begins with the Bronzeville Center for the Arts featuring Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design: Community Mural Project & Milwaukee Art Museum: Kohl’s Art Studio. The family-friendly art event takes place from 10 a.m. – noon at 2300 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Tomira White of Delicious Bites will host a Healthy Food Demonstrationat Pete’s Fruit Market, 2323 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. from noon – 12:30 p.m.
The Harambee Back to School Block Party will take place from 3 – 6 p.m. Friday on Vel R. Phillips Ave. between Wright St. and Meinecke Ave. The event his hosted by Northcott Neighborhood House, Bader Philanthropies and WestCare Wisconsin. The block party will feature food, music and more. Friday also includes Business in Bronzeville: A Primer on Business Entity, hosted by the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers. The session will occur at 5:30 p.m. at the African American Chamber of Commerce, 1920 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. The day concludes with Paint-N-Sip at 7 p.m. at Jewels Caribbean Bar, Restaurant & Lounge, 2722 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr.
The 8th annual Bronzeville Sleepover for Education is set to occur overnight starting Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. and running through 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 13. The event will take place on the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. and North Ave. in front of Pete’s Fruit Market. School supply donations are warmly accepted.
Bronzeville Week concludes on Saturday with a trio of exciting events. The day begins with Pancakes & Poetry from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Rise & Grind Café, 2737 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. The event is hosted by Mario “The Poet” Willis, Milwaukee’s Poet Laureate. The Red, Bike & Green Bronzeville Ride starts at 10 a.m. and kicks off at Gee’s Clippers, 2200 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. The final event of Bronzeville Week is the Bronzeville Art Walk & Afro Caribbean Cultural Celebration. This full day of celebrating local art and culture begins at noon and runs until 5:30 p.m. The events will take place on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. between Garfield Ave. and Meinecke Ave.
