At yesterday’s (Wednesday, June 24) meeting of the Public Works Committee, the committee recommended approval of file # 200242- a resolution relating to the application and acceptance of an outdoor recreation grant for Century City Triangle Neighborhood Park, from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Local Assistance Program. The anticipated $235,000 in funding would support development of the Century City Triangle Neighborhood Park located at 2900 West Hopkins Street through the MKE Plays initiative.
Alderman Michael J. Murphy, who conceived the MKE Plays program in 2015, is excited to see the forthcoming transformation in this area. “I want to thank the funders who have contributed to this project, and all of the MKE Plays rehabilitations over the last five years,” said Alderman Murphy. “Having well-maintained parks and play spaces helps support neighborhoods across the city, and this new and improved space will be a valuable community and neighborhood asset for all to enjoy.”
The Century City Triangle Neighborhood Park has already secured grant funding of $350,000 from the Burke Foundation and $165,000 from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. A grant application is currently pending in the amount of $105,000, and the remaining money would be provided through budgeted City funds. The total estimated cost of the project is $1,100,000. Support is also being provided by the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee.
Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, whose district the park resides in, sees this as a huge addition for the residents. “I want to thank all the residents who have already provided their input on what they want to see in this park. It takes a neighborhood effort to make a project like this a success, and to this point the engagement among neighbors has been outstanding,” said Alderman Rainey. “The rehabilitated park will be a source of pride, fun and relaxation for everyone to enjoy.”
Through outreach to the Century City Triangle Neighborhood Association, community members have shared their desires for what features they would like included in a new park. Currently, plans call for green infrastructure, nature-based play options, a multi-purpose court and field space and a covered gathering/event space, among other amenities. It is anticipated construction on the park will begin in spring of 2021.
The file will be before the full Common Council at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, July 7 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
