The City of Milwaukee has many problems that currently need to be looked at and dealt with. The three most pressing right now is crime, reckless driving and getting guns off the street. I have written about some of the solutions in past articles. Juvenile offenders are a big part of the problem. Some of these suspects are out after curfew causing all kind of issues. Parents do not seem to know or sometimes care where their children are. I have a solution that we have used long ago in the past. MPD can put out two large patrol wagons. One on the northside and one on the southside. The wagons would round up juveniles out after curfew and hold them to the parents came to pick them up. Last time we held the juveniles at one of the Boys and Girls Clubs. These kids are stealing cars, committing armed robberies and burglaries. This seemed to cut down on crime while we ran this operation.
Most people within the city are good, honest hard-working people. About 5 to 10 percent of people are committing most of the crime. The police should target these offenders and advise them this behavior will no longer be tolerated. Law enforcement will be stepped up and they will be closely watched. Legally stopping them will help to get guns off the street as they are carrying weapons at many times. Although controversial gun buy back programs have helped to get unwanted guns off the street. Some folks will turn them in just to get them out of the house. Officers also can conduct sweeps in high crime areas to get more guns off the street. The district lieutenant and captain should be out on the street to monitor what officers are doing.
The reckless driving issue must be looked at more closely as it is out of control. MPD can put out plainclothes officers in regular cars and post them at high area intersections. They can then call out reckless driving like running traffic lights and stop signs. Marked squads would be posted on the street and stop the offenders. Many times, these driving are committing other illegal activities and may have a firearm inside the vehicle.
The City of Milwaukee has extra federal money to use for a variety of things. The Acting Mayor said he wanted to use some to hire retired auto theft detectives to help with the reckless driving issues. I think he should also hire retired homicide detectives to help with the homicide backlog. They can read over reports and look for tips to help the current homicide detectives out.
These are only a few of the things I think that could be used to help improve the city.
