Funeral services for retired Milwaukee Public School teacher Cherrye Trotman will be Saturday, March 9, at St. Mark AME Church, 1616 W. Atkinson Ave.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Trotman knew Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—who was pastor of the church she and her family attended—and civil rights activist Rosa Parks, whose refusal to relinquish her bus seat to a White man sparked the famous ‘Montgomery Bus Boycott.’
Trotman also started the Martin Luther King Jr. Club in 1968 just months after his assassination. The mission of the Martin Luther King Jr Club was not only to recognize and remember Dr. King, but also to build up phenomenal youth.
Trotman died early last week. She was 92.
Visitation will be Friday March 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Northwest Funeral Chapel, 6620 W. Hampton Ave.
Her body will lie in state at St. Mark the next day (March 9) from 2 p.m. until the service starts at 3 p.m.
