Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs will join development team representatives of Emem Group and General Capital Group during the groundbreaking ceremony for the MLK Library Apartments project at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library branch located at 310 W. Locust St. The event is open to the public and media coverage is invited.
The $38.8M project will transform the 2900 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., creating 93 affordable apartments and a new 18,000 square foot public library branch. A total of five parcels are being redeveloped encompassing vacant land and underutilized buildings, including partial demolition and redevelopment of the former Garfield Theatre.
“As the doors of the existing King Library branch closed for the last time this past weekend, I recall so many memories created there,” Alderwoman Coggs said. “I am excited the new King Library branch will be built for the next generation of book lovers, and that quality housing will be provided to residents in our community. I am proud of the work of so many to bring this project to life.”
