Milwaukee, WI (August 19, 2020) The Day of Repentance and Solidarity happening on Sunday August 23, 2020 at 3PM is the kick-off to an initiative entitled, We Race Ahead. This is an alliance of City of Milwaukee and Suburban inter denominational churches and organizations to grow a more unified community that is a tangible witness of God’s love through justice and equality for all. It is said that the most segregated day in our country is Sunday and this is a catalyst to break that stigma. The spark for this programs timing was fueled by the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others; the health disparities highlighted by the COVID pandemic and the racial unrest happening right in our own state.
The founding partners believe faith based organizations can impact change and influence racial reconciliation by the acknowledgement of the church’s past and present roles in systematic racism. Repentance, which is defined as a change of heart, forgiveness, standing up for people of color and intentional steps of growing diverse relationships across the city and suburbs.
During this historic program filled with music, education, and inspiring words from faith-based leaders across the state; white church leaders plan to make a public apology to the black community and, take a pledge to take actionable steps to close the racial divide. Those steps include incorporating shared lessons and joint programming that teaches about black history, forming of relationships across the color lines along with creating coalitions between suburban and inner-city communities. All social distancing and safety guidelines will be enforced. This program is open to the general public and it will also be live streamed via the We Race Ahead Facebook and YouTube pages.
