One year ago today, my colleagues and I were sworn in to begin the new term of the Milwaukee Common Council and I had the honor of being elected Common Council President. I took a moment this morning to reflect on the past year and on our shared vision for the future. A year ago, we were just around a month into dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this year, we have worked to protect our community and deal with both the health and economic fallout of the pandemic with assistance from the state and federal government. It was truly an unprecedented challenge.
Now, many in our community have been vaccinated and the light at the end of the tunnel is becoming brighter. On Monday, I received my second dose of the vaccine alongside County Executive David Crowley and County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson.
This past year also brought serious community engagement around racial justice, policing practices, and the pursuit of racial equity. We must transform our city into a place where folks of all backgrounds can pursue their potential and build a great life. Community groups, non-profits, businesses, and government all have a role to play in making that our reality. Part of that involves making sure that our decision making is done in a transparent, inclusive and community-oriented way. That is the approach my colleagues and I are working to create with the American Rescue Plan funds our city is receiving. I am hopeful that we will continue to see more of that approach as we move ahead.
When I speak with folks in all corners of our city I hear a shared vision for the future that involves among other things more well paid, family supporting jobs, safe and livable neighborhoods, and clean air and water for all. I also hear concern about our fiscal challenges and a lack of local control. The road ahead will not be easy, but I am confident that we can get closer to our goals.
I am going to do everything I can in the next year and in the years ahead to serve our community well. I ask for your input, assistance, and support. I also ask for you to make a contribution to my campaign fund to help fuel these efforts.
