The Milwaukee Common Council will meet to vote on funding for law enforcement. On December 15th a federal grant of 9.7 million will be discussed to hire 30 more police officers over the next 3 years. Some feel the grant is a step back from steady movements to reallocate some funds, and
deapite the weather a dedicated group met to show opposition.
On December 12th at 12:30 pm, a March took place and protestors met at Washington Park, to show support against adding more police officer funding, to a already sizable budget.
The city’s current budget is currently giving 45 percent to law enforcement, prompting many to ask why not give more money to under funded social services programs.
The very essence of the march displayed the passion of those from all ethic backgrounds, and their desire to see a different approach. The event featured speakers from various Milwaukee-based organizations, who have been leading the fight on social justice. Many in the group have been marching for over 150 days in various capacities, and locations as part of the People’s Revolution and other movements. It was peaceful and respectful as I talked with participants, who were all smiles dancing to keep warm. Ending safely I am happy to report, to everyone have a great week.
