Created by the Common Council to investigate the issue of “Brain Drain” in Milwaukee, the Millennial Task Force will present its report and recommendations to the Community and Economic Development Committee TOMORROW – Thursday, June 3.
Charged with specifically assessing the major reasons Millennials choose to leave or stay in Milwaukee after college, analyzing programs and policies designed to attract and retain talented, young individuals and make recommendations to the Common Council regarding potential legislative changes and other measures needed to address the Brain Drain problem – the Millennial Task Force is now ready to report what it has found and what it is recommending, according to Alderman Cavalier Johnson, who was the primary sponsor of the legislation creating the task force (Common Council file #191180).
“The 16-member Millennial Task Force went above and beyond, meeting almost entirely virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic and working diligently on its wide-ranging report and recommendations,” Alderman Johnson said.
A 2019 report by the Office of Workforce Development showed Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin struggling to attract and retain young, educated workers. The number of 25- to 34-year olds living in Milwaukee decreased by 1.8% between 2010 and 2015 while that age group increased by 3.8% nationwide. Additionally, between 2010 and 2014, approximately 9% of 25- to 29-year olds moved out of Wisconsin, exceeding the respective national out-migration rate of 7%.
“Who better to recommend ways that we can attract and retain diverse, young and talented individuals to Milwaukee than a gifted and motivated group of people who fit that description,” Alderman Johnson said.
The report and recommendations will touch on health and wellness, equity and diversity, transportation, work and social opportunities, housing, and social justice, among many topics.
The work of the Millennial Task Force – including the full report and recommendations – will be detailed soon on the City Clerk’s Office website.
Thursday’s Community and Economic Development Committee meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. in room 301-B at City Hall (200 E. Wells St.) and will be televised live on the City Channel (Channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and on AT&T U-Verse Channel 99) in the City of Milwaukee. It can also be viewed via streaming video on the City website at milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
